The Synthetic Whisper

Ask an AI voice generator for ASMR and it will most likely whisper back as a young woman. One ASMR preset on Fish Audio is billed as a breathy, youthful, intimate female voice, which fits the genre’s long-standing default.

Machines did not invent that default. They inherited it from a genre built largely by women, and they raise a question the human genre never faced: what is a voice of care worth when no one is behind it?

Where the whisper came from

Listeners have been clear about which voice they want. In a 2021 Deezer survey of more than 12,000 people in six countries, 45% preferred female ASMR voices, 18% preferred male ones, and 30% had no preference.

The science leans the same way. The standard ASMR clip from Poerio and colleagues’ 2018 study, reused by later researchers, features a woman speaking softly while folding towels.

Why women? ASMR University suggests a mix of habit (most creators are women), cultural expectations of female nurturing, and possibly biology. Participants in a 2022 PLOS One study split sharply: some insisted the voice had to be a woman’s, others said gender made no difference.

The machine takes the brief

The AI ASMR boom began with objects, not voices. In mid-2025 Google’s Veo 3 started generating sound together with video, and clips of glass fruit and kinetic sand being sliced flooded TikTok.

Voices are the next layer, and the tools are ready. Generators now offer whisper and soft-spoken presets with adjustable breathiness, and ElevenLabs advertises a usable clone from a 10-second recording.

Nothing in the software requires a woman’s voice. The audience’s preference supplies that, and the tools simply serve it: an endless whisper, in any language, at almost no cost.

Whose voice is it?

Every synthetic voice starts as a real one. The clearest disputes so far involve women whose calm voices were valued for soothing, public roles.

Scottish voice actor Gayanne Potter recorded for the text-to-speech firm ReadSpeaker in 2021, believing the work was for accessibility and translation tools. In 2025 she recognised her voice in Iona, ScotRail’s new AI train announcer, marketed with an AI-generated image of a red-haired woman. “I did not consent,” she said.

The case reached First Minister’s Questions, and in August 2025 ScotRail agreed to replace Iona. Its December replacement was modelled on a ScotRail employee, Vanessa Sloan.

Other cases show a darker edge. Voice actor Allegra Clark found a clone of her voice making sexually suggestive remarks on TikTok. In 2024 Scarlett Johansson objected that an OpenAI chatbot voice sounded strikingly like hers, and OpenAI dropped it without admitting fault.

ASMR is unusually exposed. It is a vast, free, public archive of close-miked, intimate female speech, the kind of material voice models learn from. Creators offered that intimacy to an audience, not to a training set.

Care on demand

The synthetic whisper extends a design choice critics flagged years ago. UNESCO’s 2019 report I’d Blush If I Could argued that female-by-default assistants such as Siri and Alexa cast women as obliging helpers, available at a blunt command.

Synthetic ASMR is the intimate end of that pattern. It offers a woman’s voice tuned entirely to your comfort, with no person behind it who tires, sets limits or gets paid.

Human ASMR drew similar criticism for treating women as natural caregivers. But a human ASMRtist at least authors the performance and can play with it, as the sound artist Claire Tolan did. The synthetic version removes the author and keeps the role.

Does the tingle survive knowing?

The open question is whether any of this works once listeners know. In the 2022 PLOS One study, the ASMRtist’s authenticity mattered to participants: the sense that someone real was paying attention.

Human creators are betting on that. Eevy ASMR told a student newspaper that AI content will split viewers’ watch time, while noting that a person still sits behind every prompt.

If authenticity matters, synthetic whispers will stay in the background, as sleep loops and object videos. If it does not, the genre’s female voice becomes a commodity detached from any woman. Either way, the synthetic whisper is not a new femininity. It is an old one, with the woman taken out.
